A Chinese fisherwoman rides past old fishing boats on her motorcycle in Qingdao city, Shandong province, China, on May 14. Reports state that excessive fishing, ocean pollution and the high price of diesel have caused a sharp decline in fishery resources, nearly paralyzing the industry in East China.

Photograph of the apartment of Fred Hampton, after the raid where he was killed by members of the Chicago Police Department. Photo shows large amount of blood on the bed that he was lying in when he was initially shot, and numerous bullet holes in the walls of the room.
Fred Hampton (August 30, 1948 – December 4, 1969) was an African-American activist and deputy chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP). He was killed in his apartment during a raid by a tactical unit of the Cook County, Illinois State’s Attorney’s Office (SAO), in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
One time I was coming out of my house and I saw this kid playing by the neighbors’ cars. I had seen him before, but never next door. He was more bloated than fat, his dark skin covered with blotches and dirt, his eyes heavy with bags, his teeth too few for his age. He was missing hair in patches, a halo of thin whisps, not comparable to anything normal or healthy.
He was hideous, and I hated him for it. He was too close to my house and to my niece. The thought of his disgusting greasy hands reaching towards her dumbly made me wince. He was utterly and ultimately despicable.
“He was raped by his foster mother’s son. His hair loss is because of stress,” my sister said briefly one day. I started to shake, I tried not to vomit.
That was the day I started to question the credibility of human beauty.
